Do I need to be on an IRL (Institutional Request List)?
An Institutional Request List (IRL) is a list of college-bound student-athletes who an NCAA Division I or II college or university is interested in recruiting.
The action of activating a college-bound student-athlete to the IRL informs the NCAA Eligibility Center of the institution's interest in obtaining an academic certification decision for the student-athlete.
With this rule, a college coach has to place your name on the list. Normally a coach will do so when they are in the scholarship recruiting process with you. when a coach puts you on his IRL list, he will contact the NCAA and request that your name be cleared through the clearinghouse. Once one coach does this, you will be eligible to play at any NCAA school in the country.
You can contact a college coach and request that he place your name on his IRL list. Chances are they won't unless they have you on their position planning board as a prospective recruit for a scholarship. To learn about how a position planning board works select the "Unspoken recruiting facts" button.
If you are going to play at NCAA division I or II schools you do need to be on the IRL. The IRL is part of the eligibility required by the NCAA to play at the division I and II levels.
